Flower of the Month – April 2021

Matricaria

Family:  Asteraceae Genus: Tanacetum

Origin: Eurasia

Availability:  Summer, Autumn

Colours: White, Yellow

AKA: Feverfew, Chamomile

What’s in a name:  Due to the plants medicinal properties, particularly gynecologically, the name Matricaria stems from the Latin “Matrix” meaning womb. Whilst Feverfew was originally named for its’ fever reducing qualities it is no longer believed to be useful for this purpose.

Why we love it: Matricaria is a multi-faceted family, providing us with the happiest of flowers, an earthy fragrance and a long list of herbal uses. More commonly known is German Chamomile (M. recutita), this superstar has a vast array of uses including clearing skin conditions, improving sleep, reducing menstrual cramps and lowering blood sugar. A vase full of Feverfew and a cup of Chamomile tea sounds like the perfect way to spend an Autumn afternoon.

How to get the most out of them: Matricaria are wonderful on their own or mixed into a bouquet:

    1. Purchase when fully open.
    2. Avoid bunches with yellowing leaves.
    3. Avoid dull flowers as this may be a sign of age.
    4. Clear leaves from the lower half of the stem.
    5. Recut stems with sharp secateurs and immediately place in water.
    6. Use preservative and replenish with fresh water every day.
