Astilbe

What’s in a name: The name Astilbe stems from the Greek “A” meaning “not” and “Stilbe” meaning “glittering”. This seems to refer to the way the many tiny flowers on each stem form one larger plume, making them inconspicuous to the eye.

Why we love it: Delicate and soft, Astilbe is rare as a cut flower but unmistakable in any arrangement. The range of colours available vary from the prettiest pale pink to the most dramatic red and purple, allowing us to create with them in so many ways.  

How to get the most out of them: Astilbe is a delicate flower that requires a bit of extra love and affection.

1. Purchase when 1/3-1/2 of the stem is in flower with firm, upright tips.
2. Avoid bunches with falling flowers or discoloured foliage.
3. Remove lower leaves and recut stems with sharp secateurs and immediately place in water.
4. Add preservative to water to assist with longevity.
5. Refresh water every day.
6. Remove spent leaves as the flowers will continue to bloom.
7. If wilting occurs place stems in warm water for 1-2 hours before retrimming and placing back in cool water.
8. Keep away from sources of ethylene gases, such as car fumes, cigarette smoke and overripe fruit.
