Swan Bush

What’s in a name:  The common names generally refer to the appearance, referencing the long-necked bird shape or other things reminiscent of the hairy, balloon shaped fruit…

Why we love it: Swan Bush is more so coveted for its’ fruit which, quite unlike any other plant in the floristry world, provides any space or design a true point of difference. Swan Bush is also a common food for butterflies such as the vivid Monarch so by all means open a window and make some winged friends.

How to get the most out of them: If Swan Bush tickles your fancy keep these tips in mind:

1. Buy when colour is strong and stems, leaves and fruit are firm.
2. Remove lower leaves and recut stems with sharp secateurs.
3. Add preservative to the water to promote longevity.
4. Replace water every one to two days.
5. When fruit cracks open remove it from the stem and discard.
6. Swan Bush is toxic to pets and humans so keep away from curious little ones and wash hands is they come into contact with the milky sap.
