Lily of the Valley

Family: Asparagaceae Genus: Convallaria

Origin: Europe

Availability: Early Spring

Colours: White

AKA: May Bells, Our Lady’s Tears, Mary’s Tears

What’s in a name: The botanical name Convallaria (Valley) majalis (of May) stems from the spring symbolism of Lily of The Valley. All across Europe it is closely linked with Spring celebrations that occur throughout the month of May and is a must when gift giving at this time. The flower is also known as ‘Our Lady’s Tears’ or ‘Mary’s Tears’ as, according to legend, the tears Mary shed at the cross became Lilies of the Valley.

Why we love it: It’s no small secret that the fragrance of Lily of the Valley is a magical thing. Christian Dior’s favourite flower, this stunning scent has been immortalised in many perfumes across the decades, including the classic 1950s Diorissimo, an ode to romance and spring blooms. Beyond its heavenly scent, Lily of the Valley is a beautifully delicate flower that signifies the return of happiness and has featured in the wedding bouquets of Grace Kelly and Kate Middleton.

How to get the most out of them: These spring delights are here to bring joy and generally last 5 days as a cut flower.

  1. Purchase when heavily perfumed and at least 1/3 of the stem is in bloom as buds will not open in the vase.
  2. Avoid bunches with falling flowers or no open buds.
  3. Remove lower leaves and recut stems with sharp secateurs.
  4. Add preservative to water to maintain fragrance.
  5. Refresh water every other day.
  6. If stems become limp, place in cold water to refresh.
