AKA: Christmas Star

What’s in a name:  Named for Joel Roberts Poinsett, a U.S. ambassador who first introduced the plant to the U.S. in 1825.

Why we love it: This tropical plant exudes festive cheer from its vibrantly coloured leaves and tiny flowers. Poinsettias, originating in Central America prefer a warm spot year-round and need little watering so they’re well suited to our Australian climate! Being a part of the Euphorbia family Poinsettias were mistakenly considered poisonous for decades. Fortunately for those that are tempted to have a taste they will only receive mild nausea for their efforts..

How to get the most out of them: Poinsettias are low maintenance, asking only for filtered light and a water when dry:

1. Keep in a bright spot indoors or part shade outdoors.
2. Bring plants indoors during cooler months.
3. Test soil with your fingers and water when dry.
4. These plants are very sensitive to ethylene and need to be kept away from fruit, car fumes and cigarette smoke.
