Ornamental Kale

Family:  Brassicaceae Genus: Brassica Species: oleracea (Acephala group)

Origin: Europe

Availability:  Autumn and Winter

Colours: Pink, white, cream, green, purple, black

AKA: Flowering Kale, Kale, Ornamental Cabbage

What’s in a name: While the common name is pretty self-explanatory, the etymology of the botanical name is somewhat vague. Most sources suggest the Latin “Brassica” and “Acephala” translate as “headless” or “cut off the head”.

Why we love it: A member of the mustard family and closely related to vegetables such as cauliflower, broccoli and brussels sprouts, this unique vegetal variety adds a point of difference to any arrangement with its oversized, cabbage-like heads.

How to get the most out of them: Kale are a wonderful long-lasting variety if you’re ready to mix things up:

1. Avoid stems with dried or brown leaves.
2. Keep in a cool space, out of direct sunlight.
3. Keep water fresh and avoid sulphuric fragrance by adding a few drops of bleach to the water.
4. Always use preservative and refresh water daily.
