Waratah

Colours: White, Cream, Pink and Red

Availability:  Only a few weeks from late winter to early spring

What’s in a name:  Telopea is derived from the Greek word ‘telopos’, meaning ‘seen from afar’, this refers to the vibrant crimson flowers which can be spotted from a mile away. The name Waratah comes from the Eora Aboriginal people, the original inhabitants of the Sydney area.

Why we love it: A true Australian Native and the floral emblem of New South Wales, Waratahs are only available for a few weeks of the year. We love the impact Waratahs give to any space with the pink and red varieties exuding pure wow factor and the white giving elegant cool.

How to get the most out of them: Waratahs have a great vase life and need little maintenance.

1. Choose flowers with tight florets and strong, green leaves.
2. Make sure leaves are clear of the water and cut stems with sharp secateurs.
3. No need to crush stems or add preservative to the water. Instead a couple of drops of bleach will keep the water clean.
4. Change water every one to two days.

Waratahs are very sensitive to ethylene so keep them at a distance from fruit, cigarette smoke and car fumes.
