Banksia Prionotes

Origin: Australia

Availability:  Summer, Autumn

AKA: Acorn Banksia, Orange Banksia, Sawtooth Banksia, Golden Banksia

 

What’s in a name:  While all of the common names follow a relatively direct approach the botanical name would seem a little less obvious. That is until we dissect it to find that Prionotes is derived from the Greek “Prion” meaning saw, again reffering to the beautiful features of the Australian Banksia.

 

Why we love it: The Prionotes Banksia is always welcome as one of the first natives to bloom in the new year.  It’s strong, sculptural form, vibrant orange collar and stunning serrated leaves make it a beautiful flower to display on its own as well as in arrangements.

 

How to get the most out of them: Banksias are a piece of natural art with a fantastic lifespan and require little maintenance:

1. Purchase when brightly coloured and approximately one third of the flower is open and fluffy.
2. Avoid dull flowers as this may be a sign of age.
3. Clear leaves from the lower half of the stem.
4. Recut stems with sharp secateurs and immediately place in water.
5. Refresh water every day. Banksias can drink more than you think!
6. Avoid misting flowers or you may promote blackening.
