Tuberose

What’s in a name:  The name Tuberose derives from the Latin tuberosa and French tubereuse which refer to the “swollen” root system.

Why we love it: Tuberose have an enviable scent which was lauded by Louis XIV to the extent that hundreds upon hundreds of tuberose plants filled the gardens of Versailles. The oil of the tuberose is still used as a principle ingredient in high quality perfumes.

How to get the most out of them: Tuberose are here for a good time not a long time so follow these guidelines to make sure you get the most out of them!

1. Choose strongly perfumed bunches with strong stems and 2 to 4 lower buds open.
2. Make sure leaves are clear of the water and cut stems with sharp secateurs.
3. Add preservative to the water to promote strong perfume and longer flowering.
4. Change water every one to two days.
5. The top bud can be nipped to promote straighter stems and more even flowering.
6. Remove spent buds when they wilt as they are a source of ethylene.
7. Keep away from other ethylene sources such as fruit, car fumes and cigarette smoke.
